Formula and method
Net wall area is multiplied by wall thickness to give the wall volume. The number of bricks per cubic metre is derived from brick dimensions including the mortar joint, and the count is increased by the waste allowance.
How to measure the inputs
- Measure the wall length and height and multiply by the number of identical walls.
- Measure the actual brick and the joint you will build, not just the nominal size.
- Confirm the wall thickness from the drawing, for example 102 mm, 215 mm or a cavity build-up.
Worked example
Wall length 16.4 ft; Wall height 9.84 ft; Wall count 1; Openings area (optional) 3.23 ft²; Brick length 9.45 in; Brick height 2.36 in; Wall thickness 7.87 in; Mortar joint 0.39 in; Waste 5 % → Bricks with waste: 882; Bricks before waste: 840
Practical tips
- Order the full quantity in one go so all bricks come from one batch.
- Keep a pallet dry and covered on site.
- Deduct large openings but allow for the extra cutting around them.
