Smart Build Calculators

Wall Putty Calculator

Estimate filler and skim coat quantities for a wall from its area, the coat thickness and how many coats you will apply.

Formula and method

Net wall area is multiplied by the layer thickness and the number of coats to give a volume, and by the consumption rate to give the mass. The mass is divided by the bag weight and rounded up.

How to measure the inputs

  1. Measure the wall length and height, then enter how many walls are the same.
  2. Deduct large openings, but keep the reveals in mind.
  3. Note the consumption rate and bag weight from the packaging.

Worked example

Wall length 13.12 ft; Wall height 9.84 ft; Wall count 1; Openings area (optional) 3.23 ft²; Layer thickness 0.08 in; Number of coats 2; Consumption rate 2; Package weight 6.61 lb; Waste 10 % → Putty bags: 35

Practical tips

  • Sand between coats — it is what makes the final coat look flat under paint.
  • Mix only as much as you can apply before it starts to set.
  • Check the surface with a light held at a low angle before painting.
