Formula and method
The room area is divided by the area of one tile to get a raw count. The waste percentage is then applied and the result is rounded up, because tiles are only sold in whole pieces.
How to measure the inputs
- Measure the longest length and the widest width of the area at floor level.
- For L-shaped rooms, split the area into rectangles, calculate each one and add the results.
- Measure one tile with a tape measure rather than trusting the nominal size on the box.
Worked example
Room length 13.12 ft; Room width 9.84 ft; Tile length 11.81 in; Tile width 11.81 in; Waste 10 % → Tiles with waste: 147; Tiles before waste: 133
Practical tips
- Buy all tiles in one batch: colours can vary slightly between production runs.
- Keep at least one spare box after tiling for repairs.
- For large-format tiles add extra waste, as a single miscut wastes a lot of area.
